14th Asean summit

Pattaya, Chonburi, Thailand

April 10-12

  • How the Asean summit may effect you

Because Asean is a cooperative of Southeast Asian nations, agreements among member states can have a profound effect on the world stage.

Since its inception, Asean cooperation has focused on three important areas: security, economics and socio-cultural collaboration among the 10 member countries.

Additionally, Asean has worked with other countries, resulting in the Asean +3 (China, Japan and South Korea) and Asean +6 (China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand).

The Asean +3 focus is on food security and bio fuel while Asean +6 is currently focusing its efforts on natural disaster prevention.

The upcoming 14th Asean summit's theme; "Asean Charter for Asean People", aims to establish an Asean community by 2015. The summit will focus on discussing orientations and measures to implement the Asean charter and strengthen the degree of an intra-Asean alliance, as well as seeking cooperation between the bloc and outside partners.

The recent visit by US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton to the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta has helped highlight the importance of Asean's role in the region and signalled America's desire to work more closely with Asean.

  • Background information

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok by the five original Member Countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.  Brunei Darussalam joined on 8 January 1984, Vietnam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999.

As of 2006, the ASEAN region has a population of about 560 million, a total area of 4.5 million square kilometers, a combined gross domestic product of almost US$ 1,100 billion, and a total trade of about US$ 1,400 billion.

    Objectives

The ASEAN Declaration states that the aims and purposes of the Association are:
    (1) to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region and (2) to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The ASEAN Vision 2020, adopted by the ASEAN Leaders on the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN, agreed on a shared vision of ASEAN as a concert of Southeast Asian nations, outward looking, living in peace, stability and prosperity, bonded together in partnership in dynamic development and in a community of caring societies.

In 2003, the ASEAN Leaders resolved that an ASEAN Community shall be established comprising three pillars, namely, ASEAN Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community.
